A place to learn a new language, the Koehler Method of Dog Training, which is an entire language of communication between owner(s) and their dog. Let their journey begin...
Here's our task schedule, obviously the timeline will shift with how quickly we achieve the goals... starting with an hour a day, every day, no excuses. Will post progress daily in comments.
Results 3/30: Heel @12" - forgot to focus on it, just heeled around the porch with fast short steps. Sit/Stay @12' - check w/1 correction Recall to SSIF @ 12' - check x 2 Stand/Stay @ 6' - 90 sec w/out correction Finish - perfect 1 out of 3 - mainly me being clumsy Approach by friend - Performed 3 times diff angles, perfect! Down/Stay - Skipped
We worked on front porch with increasing winds and Lexi watching. We had people walk by across the street with a known distraction dog, no break from a sit at my side.
She hit her limit faster than I expected, so I let her go to crate time without working on down. May try again this evening, for sure after church tomorrow.
Results 3/31: Trained on porch again, even windier this afternoon. LL - In next door pasture along the fence line with a slew of curious cows right on the other side. Piper broke once only at the start. Then stayed close to me as I moved closer to them. Heel @12" - check... when against a wall, once we were back in the open she moved to about 2'. That seems to be her comfort zone, unless we are drilling turns or 8's. Will keep working on moving her closer. Sit/Stay @12' 3min w/ Recall to SSIF - check with only 1 correction Stand/Stay @ 6' - Still not setting this up right, she stands then sits again. Once I got her set in stand, she held freeze for 1min. Finish x 3 - Still need to guide her around to my left, so I know she doesn't have it yet. Down/Stay @1min - check w/ verbal command. Still need to practice hand signals.
I'm still clumsy and forget my hands and fell positions sometimes. Doing it daily helps me remember and refine the small details. All in all given the wind, I thought we did well. See you gals tomorrow morning 9:45am for fly on the wall quiet time.
Still chugging along... Monday 4/1 - Shadowed Foundation class. Focused on LL work and QT Tuesday 4/2 - Porch & front yard - moderate distraction... chicken! Made Piper weave through a line or her favorite treat. Took one strong OUT and a couple more softer corrections to bring her around. After 3-4 passes, she just stayed close for each pass and didn't do more than side eye the food. Finished the session with 60 sec stand and sit/stay with the dog across the street loose and running around. Def a moderate distraction.
Also, for the last 3-4 days we have started walking 2-3 miles at night, using her rope leash. Yesterday I gave her about 10-15 min to sniff and potty, then reined in the length of rope to keep her close to my side without pulling. Tonight I'll take her 6' leash along and work on her heel after she gets her 10-15 min of sniffing with the rope.

"Yard - by - yard, it's too hard, BUT inch - by - inch, it's a cinch!"
ReplyDeleteKeep on keeping on, Kellie. Steady progress is achieved by persevering.
Love your attitude, Kellie!
